Why Bed Bugs Stink
The smell of dead bed bugs is often an indicator that you might have a bedbug infestation. The smell is usually very distinct, only noticeable when there’s an infestation. They produce a scent called a pheromone that tells other bugs to flee. This pheromone is very powerful. It has an aroma that is similar to that of a damp locker room, or an old wet towel lying on the floor. If you smell this odor, you should go inspect the place closely to determine whether you’re actually smelling a bed bug infestation.
The scent of bed bugs is caused by two factors. First of all, they’re attracted to air with a high concentration of CO2. When you’re sleeping, you’re breathing out carbon dioxide, which makes the air around you more carbonated than normal. Additionally, the smell of your clothes may attract bedbugs. This is because your clothing may be dirty, which is another source of CO2. In addition, if you’re not in bed, you may notice other signs of bedbug infestation.
If you suspect that you have a bedbug infestation, you’ll want to examine the mattress’s seams for fecal stains. This will give you a good idea of where the bugs are hiding.
