Why Are Bed Bugs on the Rise?
Bed bugs are an increasingly common occurrence in modern living, but the good news is that there are many ways to prevent them from affecting your home. The best way to avoid infestation is to inspect your home regularly. This means running clothing through the dryer after washing, and inspecting any furnishings that may have fecal spots.
According to a recent survey conducted by Orkin, a pest control company, the number of bedbug cases per million people in the U.S. is up by more than 50 percent. The numbers are based on a survey of pest control professionals worldwide. Currently, the top three cities in the U.S. with the highest number of infestations are Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.
The increase in infestations may be attributed to an increase in insecticide resistance. This, in turn, has led to more widespread infestations, particularly in living rooms and bedrooms. According to a New York Times article, one in five Americans has experienced infestations at some point in their lives. The worst areas for infestations were in Washington, DC, Baltimore, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
While bedbugs are still a common problem, they are now resistant to a range of chemicals, making them harder to eradicate. Despite pyrethroids being widely used, some resistant varieties of bedbugs remain a concern. As a result, more research and public education are necessary to address the issue.
