How Common Are Bullet Ants in Costa Rica?
WouterAmong the most common ants found in Costa Rica are the Bullet Ants. These large, hairy ants are a common sight in the rainforest. These ants live in colonies, and usually are found subterraneously at tree bases. The colonies are comprised of several hundred individuals.
Bullet ants have long antennae, large mandibles, and a tri-segmented body. Their sting is painful and can leave the victim swollen.
Bullet ants have many common names, including “Big Black Ants,” “Formigao-preto,” and “24-hour Ants.” Bullet ants are found in Central and South America, and are known for their large size and presence in the rainforest.
Bullet ants are often found on tree trunks, but can also be found on palms and palm leaves. These insects build colonies on two species of lianas. During the day, the ants may look for food. They may forage for nectar, or plant sap. The most common food for the bullet ant is nectar.
The sting is painful, but usually heals on its own. Some people have reported suffering a worse pain than being shot. However, if a human is allergic to the ant sting, it can kill them.
The Bullet Ant is found in Costa Rica, Brazil, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and the Amazon rainforest. They are known as the “big black ants” in Brazil. Some native tribes use Bullet Ants in initiation ceremonies. In some cases, young males have to endure the pain of being bitten by Bullet Ants for at least 20 times.
