Can Ants Give You Hives?

Symptoms of ant bites can range from a minor discomfort to severe hives. Some ant bites will heal on their own, while others require medical attention. Depending on the type of reaction you have, you may need to visit a physician or use an epinephrine autoinjector.

The severity of ant bites and stings will determine how quickly you need medical attention. If you have a severe allergic reaction, you should carry an epinephrine autoinjector or visit an emergency room right away. You will need to be assessed by an allergist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Most ant bites are painful, but severe reactions are extremely rare. Symptoms may include itching, dizziness, nausea, stomach cramps, and difficulty breathing. You may also experience swelling and pale gums.

Some people are allergic to ants, and a mild reaction can be treated at home. However, a more serious reaction called anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention. Anaphylaxis may also cause difficulty breathing, dizziness, throat swelling, or other severe symptoms. If you are allergic to ants, you should carry an epinephrine device and learn how to administer it.

The first step in treating an ant bite is to identify which ant it was. Identifying the ant that bit you helps your physician offer you the best treatment.

You may not be allergic to ants, but you may be allergic to other substances in the ant venom. If you have a severe allergic reaction, your symptoms will include hives, dizziness, stomach cramps, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the throat.
