Why Are Wasps Attracted to Light?

These are special eyes that allow the insects to see high frequencies of light, and to distinguish light from dark. Their compound eyes can see ultraviolet light, and other frequencies that are outside the range of the human eye. This helps wasps obtain nectar from flowers.
Second, wasps are attracted to a wide variety of colors. Interestingly, they see colors differently than humans do. Their compound eyes can see ultraviolet light, but they cannot see red light. This is because the wavelength of red light is far too large for their eyes.
Third, wasps are attracted to varying degrees of heat. They may see the bright light from inside light bulbs as food, or they may be drawn to the warmth of a fireplace or barbecue. Regardless of their choice, wasps are not a good thing to have around. They can be a nuisance, and they can cause damage to your home.
Fourth, wasps are attracted to certain colors. The color purple is a good example. This color is particularly attractive to wasps that are fed on nectar from orchids. Likewise, yellow is attractive to wasps that feed on spiders on dandelions.
However, wasps do not see colors as well as humans do. Their compound eyes are not able to see wavelengths higher than 600 nanometers, and they cannot see red.
