Wasps V Lyon on TV
WouterNeither Wasps nor Lyon had been to a European final in 15 years, but the two clubs are now in the finals of the European Challenge Cup. Lyon have won the competition for the first time in their history, while Wasps will look to reach the final for the first time since 2007.
Wasps had beaten Edinburgh and Biarritz on their travels, but they’d lost in the semi-finals to Glasgow Warriors. The Gallagher Premiership side pinned Lyon deep in their own half in the first half. The home side then led 8-3 at halftime. The match was still tight at 11-10 with just over 30 minutes to play.
Lyon fought back in the second half to score a try and earn a penalty. Their replacement hooker Yanis Charcosset rounded off a fine effort in the 52nd minute.
Lyon looked to get the ball into the hands of their fly-half Leo Berdeu. He kicked 15 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop the hosts from losing. The try should not overshadow the game’s greatness, though.
Wasps started the second half with fire, laying siege to the Lyon line. It was a testament to the home side’s excellent defence that they managed to keep the ball alive throughout the match.
Lyon eventually scored the try they needed to take the lead. They pinned Wasps deep in their own half and attacked on a scrum free-kick. Davit Niniashvili and Berdeu both touched down, while replacement hooker Yanis Charcosset scored a close-range try.
