Is it Too Early For Wasps?
During summer, a wasp colony will produce several new queens. If you have noticed a few wasps around your home recently, it is time to take a closer look at the colony.
Queens spend the winter in hibernation, typically in attics, caves, and deep crevices. They are vulnerable to predators and can die from starvation, especially if the weather is cold. The queen may also decide to create a new colony in the spring.
The queen of a wasp colony decides when to lay the eggs that will form the new colony. These eggs are laid in the cells of the nest.
These eggs hatch into larvae, which will be fed by the worker wasps. These larvae produce a sweet liquid that will help the worker wasps survive. This process occurs over several weeks.
The queen continues to lay eggs in May. The queen is responsible for coordinating the activities of the workers. She also produces drones, which are able to carry on the queen’s mission. These drones build the nest, as well as find food for the larvae.
When the weather is cold and food is scarce, many adult wasps die. However, some wasps survive through winter, especially if the climate is warm.
Wasps that have survived the winter will begin laying eggs in the spring. Some colonies will grow to thousands of wasps at a time. In some cases, the wasps will reach full population by June.
One of the most important tasks that a wasp colony performs is producing a new queen. This happens after a year of hibernation.
