How Many Wasps in a Small Nest?

Depending on the season of discovery, a single wasp nest can contain a large number of wasps. This can range from thousands to hundreds of wasps in a single nest.

Paper wasps build nests that are made of wood pulp, saliva and other materials. These nests are small, about the size of a basketball. They are made in a similar fashion to a beehive. They have hexagonal cells filled with wood pulp.

The queen wasp will build a nest in the late spring. She will lay eggs in the nest’s cells. These eggs hatch into worker wasps. The worker wasps will care for the younglings. The nest will swell in size by the summer. The worker wasps will be aggressive when they protect the nest.

When the weather becomes colder, the queen wasp will die. The young wasps will continue to build the nest. They will not survive without the queen. This is because they will not be able to find enough food to sustain themselves.

A queen wasp can live for twelve months. During the winter, the queen will hibernate in a basement or attic. If the weather becomes warm, the queen will emerge. In summer, she will be busy laying eggs.

The number of wasps in a small nest depends on the food supply. If there isn’t enough food to sustain them, the colony will die off. A single nest can have more than one queen. The dominant queen lays more eggs.
