How Large Are Wasp Nests?
During the summer months, wasps build large nests that can hold up to 10,000 individuals. These nests are often found in trees, shrubs, or even on your property. They are not usually welcome by humans but they do provide beneficial pollination and are a natural way to control pests.
There are two main types of wasp nests. One type is made by hornets, while the other is made by paper wasps. Paper wasp nests are smaller than the hornet’s nest, and are made out of hexagonal cells.
Hornets are the largest of the wasps, with nests that can be as big as a basketball. Their nests are made of tubes and chambers. In a typical hornet nest, there are up to 700 hornets. Other wasps may bring food to the queen.
Paper wasp nests are smaller than hornet’s nests, and are usually made out of hexagonal cells. They are also found in North America.
Hornet nests are similar to German wasp nests, but are larger. They usually contain only a few hundred individuals, though they can reach up to ten thousand during peak season.
The most common nest building material is paper pulp. This pulp is made from raw wood and wasp saliva. Unlike hornet nests, paper wasp nests can become extremely large if left alone. They are usually about three to four inches in diameter.
The most common wasp species are harmless and beneficial. However, some wasps can sting. Fortunately, most wasps can be treated safely.
