During the winter, the queen wasp goes into a semi-dormant state. She sleeps in a nest cell and tucks her wings around her body. She does this to ensure the larvae will survive.
When the weather gets warmer, the queen wasp begins laying eggs. She also begins to search for a new location for her colony. After she has found a suitable place, she builds a nest. These nests can range from basements to attics. The nest is made of paper-like material.
When the queen wasps are ready to emerge from their dormancy, they begin to mate. After they mate, the queen will search for a warm, dry place to hibernate. If the queen finds a suitable place to hibernate, she lays eggs in the nest cells. The eggs will hatch into young wasps. These larvae will then begin to feed on protein-rich insects.
The young wasps will then begin to build a nest. The nest can be as large as the nest of the original queen. However, the nest will usually die off after the winter.
The queen wasp will then begin to search for new colonies. The young queen wasps will hide in crevices around the exterior of the home. They are hard to see in the winter.
