How Do Paper Wasps Lose Their Stingers?
Typically, paper wasps are not aggressive. If disturbed, however, they will sting you. If stung more than once, you may experience a severe allergic reaction. If you are allergic, avoid wearing bright colors and perfumes outside.
Paper wasps form colonies. Colonies usually start with a single female. As the summer goes on, more and more workers are produced. The maximum colony size is usually achieved by late summer or early fall.
A nest is created out of wood fibers and saliva. Nests can be built in various locations, including under eaves and on building facades. Alternatively, they can be built in the ground.
Paper wasps are docile when they are not near the nest. They are only aggressive when they sense danger or the nest is being disturbed. They do not have a sting apparatus on their abdomens. However, the venom is quite painful. If you are allergic, you may experience a mild to severe reaction to a paper wasp sting.
If you think you may have a wasp infestation, contact a licensed pest control professional. If you have a social wasp colony, it may be difficult to eliminate. If you are not able to eliminate the nest, you may use pressurized aerosol products containing quick knockdown chemicals. You can also try wiping down tables and other surfaces that wasps may find appealing.
The CDC recommends that you avoid perfumed products and discarded foods. You should also wear clothing that covers your body.
