Can Wasps Kill Cats?

Getting stung by wasps is not a life threatening situation for most cats. However, in some cats, the sting may trigger a serious allergic reaction.

The first sign of a wasp sting in a cat is localized pain and swelling at the sting site. These symptoms may last for a day or two. Itching and salivation may also occur. If the sting is on a sensitive part of the body, like the mouth, the cat may need to see the vet immediately.

A cat that has been stung by wasps may also develop a more serious reaction called anaphylactic shock. This reaction can lead to cardiac arrest. Without veterinary treatment, the cat may suffer from cyanosis, a condition where the body’s oxygen levels drop to dangerously low levels.

Symptoms of anaphylactic shock can include palpitations, a life-threatening increase in blood pressure, and abnormal heartbeat. In addition, there may be a release of generalized histamine, which can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, and collapse.

An ice pack or cool washcloth can be applied to the stung area to reduce the swelling. A cool tea towel can also be used to help prevent frostbite.

Antihistamines may be administered by the vet to counteract the histamine in the cat’s system. Tweezers can be used to remove the stinger. Tweezers are also useful in squeezing out additional venom.

It is also important to monitor your cat’s condition for 24 hours. During this time, keep an eye on how your cat is eating, breathing, and coping with the pain.
