When a colony of termites is found, they create tunnels to move around. These tubes are about the thickness of a pencil. They are constructed of bits of wood and soil. Some of these tubes can be more than a foot long. These tubes can be on the outside or inside of the wall, and are usually made of two separate sections.
When the colony reaches a certain size, the reproductive termites begin to leave. They will drop their wings when they leave to find a mate. They will then start a new colony.
Depending on the species of termites, they can be found in drywood, moistwood, or subterranean areas. Each species requires a specific temperature and moisture for its colony. Some species prefer to nest in damp wood, while others prefer to be in dry wood.
