How Common Is Termites?

Termites are an ecologically important insect that are common to the United States. They are small, whitish insects that forage constantly for cellulose. Termites start their life as eggs laid by a queen. The king fertilizes these eggs and produces a special type of nymph. The king feeds the young on predigested food. The alates, which are reproductive termites, usually pair with a female to form a new colony.

Termites are divided into three main castes. They are workers, soldiers and reproductives. The size of the insects, the number of species, and the environment can make some species more voracious than others.

Typically, a colony consists of several thousand to several million members. Each member of a colony can live for a long time. However, most of them will not survive for very long. Hence, the colony is very vulnerable to a serious threat.

When termites find wood, they chew through it. They can also eat through wallpaper and plastic. This damage can be costly to repair. If you are having problems with termites, you should contact a professional to inspect your home and recommend a treatment.

A sign of a termite infestation is the presence of flying insects. They can be found in the kitchen, bathroom, or even on the floor. They can also be mistaken for flying ants.
