The Venus flytrap is native to coastal North and South Carolina. It has adapted leaves that can attract and capture unsuspecting insects. It has a digestive mechanism similar to our own stomachs, which breaks down the insect’s exoskeleton and soft tissues. It also secretes digestive juices that break down the insect’s blood.
The traps contain three red sessile glands. The glands begin producing digestive fluids when the clip is closed. They also contain a bait station that releases sweet nectar to entice prey.
During the growing season, Venus flytraps are able to eat one to two insects every month. However, they will eventually die if they catch larger prey.
The Venus flytraps can be fed from dead or living insects. It has a special system that distinguishes between live and non-live bugs. To feed non-live food, you will need to touch the trigger hairs on the leaf. If the prey runs away, the trigger hairs will become invigorated and open the trap.
These carnivorous plants are highly developed. They can survive without food during the dormant season, but they need to be fed with freshly killed prey. If you don’t feed them regularly, they will eventually die.
