Where Are the Richmond Spiders From?
The University of Richmond Spiders represent the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. Their men’s basketball team plays in the Atlantic 10 Conference. They are coached by Chris Mooney, who has been at the University since 2005. He is the second longest tenured coach in the conference.
Since 2006, the Spiders have made it to the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament twice. In 2010, they reached the Sweet Sixteen. However, in 2011, they did not advance. They are hoping to make it to the tournament again this year. If they qualify, they will face Providence on Saturday.
Before joining the A-10, the Richmond Spiders were part of the Atlantic Sun Conference. They competed in that league for 22 years. The Richmond Spiders volleyball team won the 2008 Division 1-AA championship.
Richmond beat Montana 24-7 in the FCS National Championship Game on December 19, 2008. This was the first national title for a University of Richmond team. As of 2018, the Richmond Spiders are looking for a tenth trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Mooney has led the Spiders to a combined record of 11-10. Several of the players have had their numbers retired. These include Nick Sherod, Jacob Gilyard, and Grant Golden.
The Richmond Spiders play their home games at the Robins Center. The facility includes a natatorium, offices, and support facilities for most Spider athletic programs. It also has the largest video boards in the conference.
During the 2013-14 season, the arena underwent a $17 million renovation. Some of the improvements included new seating, terrace hospitality areas, and offices.
