How Do Spiders Live in the Winter?
WouterWhen you think of spiders, you probably think of a creature with a web. The truth is, spiders are very versatile creatures. They can survive cold temperatures. Some spiders will hibernate in the winter while others will continue to be active.
Most spiders find shelter in leaves or other areas. Some species of spiders also build insulated nests and pods. The spiders are able to keep warm thanks to a special chemical they produce. This chemical is called polyhydroxy alcohol. It works with the bloodstream to help the spider not freeze.
Some spiders hibernate in snow-covered caves, under tree bark, or in ice-resistant coats. Other spiders seek shelter in rocks or piles of leaves. Some species will build nests or webs in chimneys and downspouts.
Some species are ectothermic, meaning that they can change their temperature depending on the environment. They can remain underground or bask in the sun if it’s too cold. If the weather is too warm, they can hunker down in the shade.
Some spiders lay their eggs in the autumn, before snowfall. These eggs are usually in the form of an egg sac. The female spider carries the sac herself. It is made of woven silk. This sac contains up to several hundred eggs. The eggs are often affixed to the surface.
In the spring, the spiders will re-emerge when the weather warms up. This can be a difficult time for homeowners. They may have to be wary of spiders as they will fight for access to the home. Some of the most common household guests are jumping spiders and wolf spiders.
