Are Spiders Bad For Tomato Plants?
Spider mites can be very troublesome on tomatoes. They can damage leaves and cause color changes. In addition, they can create tiny webs on the plant.
The spider mite population can double in a matter of four days. So, if you see any signs of infestation, you’ll need to take action. To get rid of these pests, you can use a spray solution or insecticidal soap. However, it may take some time to eliminate the infestation.
Neem oil is another option. This product is formulated to eliminate spider mites. You can apply it to the infested tomato plant. Using this spray can be a bit more time consuming, but you will likely notice results within a few weeks.
Horticultural oils are also a good option. These are non-toxic and are designed to kill insects without harming the plant. However, they are not ideal for water-stressed plants. If you plan on applying these sprays to the tomato plant, you should check the package for instructions on the best time to apply it.
To prevent the spider mites from overtaking your tomatoes, start planting your tomatoes early. Start them indoors or out of the sun during the afternoon. Keep them away from other plants and keep them well-watered.
Another thing to do is mulch your tomato plants with straw or a commercial mulch from a garden center. Be sure to leave at least an inch of space around the stems. Alternatively, you can spray a hose to remove the spider mites.
