These smells can frighten rats, and you can use them to keep them away from you. Rat repellents include clover, garlic, onion, hot peppers with capsaicin, house ammonia, used coffee grounds, peppermint, and eucalyptus. If these don’t work, you can also try citronella oil.
If you find holes in your cardboard boxes, plastic packaging, or paper bags, you should consider rat infestation. These critters are more adept at getting through tough exteriors than mice, so it’s better to store dry food in sealed containers with a lid. You should also avoid using cardboard boxes for food storage as they attract rat infestations.
