What Rats Are Scared Of

Many rats fear humans, which makes sense, as humans are bigger than rats. However, rats also fear other animals, including cats and birds of prey. Rats are also afraid of snakes and weasels. These creatures can be very agile, which makes them a good target for hunters. But, despite their neophobia, rats will still venture into your home to find food, including your garbage.

Rats’ sense of smell is heightened by strong odors. If possible, keep your home smelling fresh to discourage them. Another way to scare them away is to keep your home clean and uncluttered. Also, try putting cheesecloth with crushed cloves or cayenne pepper in places where rats frequent. If this doesn’t work, try putting bottle caps with ammonia inside them. Rats are frightened by loud noises.

The smell of peppermint is another effective repellent. The aroma is unpleasant to rats, but it is pleasant to humans. You can sprinkle peppermint oil around rat-prone areas. Alternatively, sprinkle pepper flakes around the perimeter of your home. This will discourage them from entering the house.

Rats are more aggressive than mice. They are more likely to strike out when they are cornered or threatened. So, it’s best not to try catching them barehanded.
