Wood shavings are not good rat bedding, as they release phenols over time. These phenols irritate the mucous lining of the rat’s respiratory system. Kiln-dried shavings are an excellent choice, as the drying process eliminates phenols.
Another good option for rat bedding is hemp. Hemp bedding is a naturally absorbent product and does not attract dust and other harmful particles. Hemp is also low in palatability, meaning your rat is unlikely to become sick from it. Hemp bedding is also much safer than straw and hay, as it doesn’t contain pesticides.
Paper pellets are another option. They work similar to wood shavings but are dust-free and biodegradable. Paper bedding is also a good choice if you have rats that are sensitive to light. However, the downside of paper bedding is that it can quickly absorb urine and turn into mush. Therefore, you should change it every few days.
