What Happens When Rats Have Babies?

Gestation time is typically 21 to 23 days. During this time, the female rat will start to make a nest, which will be made of tissue paper or other soft materials.
If the mother does not have any babies yet, it is best to place the babies in a container on a heating pad that has a low setting, or place the container next to a light bulb. It’s important to keep a thermometer near the babies so you can monitor their temperature. The temperature of the babies should remain between 100 and 102 degrees Fahrenheit.
The gestation period for rats is approximately 21 days, but the babies are often undetectable until the last few weeks. A pregnant female will have a full belly and chest and will appear rounder. If you find a female rat is pregnant, it’s a good idea to take it to a vet for a physical exam, because the rat may be aggressive. Don’t try to touch or feel the babies as you may harm them.
