What Food Can’t Rats Resist?
Rats can eat nearly anything, but there are some items they simply can’t resist. These foods include peanut butter, jelly, and cheese. Rats are drawn to these foods by their flavor and smell. If you don’t want to endanger your rats’ health, avoid giving them these foods. Instead, offer them as special treats.
Rats and mice are naturally attracted to foods such as grains, seeds, and nuts. In rural or agricultural settings, they frequent grain storage bins and fields prior to harvest. In suburban areas, they may search for tasty seeds in cabinets and bird seed containers. They also raid grass seed and unprotected food sources.
Fruits and vegetables are also good choices for bait. Rats are naturally attracted to the strong scent of these foods, so they are prone to be attracted to fruit trees and other plants. Similarly, rats enjoy wood, cardboard, and nut products. It is best to store these items in glass jars or airtight containers to prevent rats from accessing them.
Carbonated drinks and sweetened drinks are not toxic to rats, but they can be a favorite for rodents. They contain caffeine, sugar, and other additives that make them irresistible to rats. Alcohol, on the other hand, is lethal for rats when consumed in high enough quantities. Alcohol can also make rats ill and contribute to obesity.
