Is Mrs Brisby and the Rats of NIMH a Movie?
In the novel, the Rats of NIMH have to deal with a mysterious creature named the Dragon, who has the power to consume humans. The villain of the movie, however, is an evil rat named Jenner. The rat is evil and conniving, and he is assisted by a beta rat. The beta rat, though not named in the novel, proves to be a useful sidekick, and the film ends with him killing his master.
The rat leader Nicodemus has mysterious powers that help him in his mission to become as intelligent as human beings. His plan hinges on the fact that the rats are self-sufficient, but it’s conspicuous to steal electricity from humans. This is a dangerous activity. Despite this, the Rats of NIMH are beginning to develop deeper emotion and human morality. This is reflected in Mrs. Brisby’s use of the Stone as a pendant, and in the way that the rat technology is mixed with Nicodemus’ technomagery.
While the Rats of NIMH book was written for a young audience, the movie will be aimed at an adult audience. This would mean that it would have to play up the horrors of the experiments, which would be inappropriate for young children.
