How Hot is Too Hot For Rats?
WouterRats have a high metabolic rate, which can make it difficult to regulate their body temperature. This can be particularly problematic for rats who have an infection. Fortunately, certain foods and ice cubes can help maintain their normal body temperature. These foods include frozen peas and sweetcorn.
The ideal temperature range for rats is between 60 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. However, extreme temperatures can cause heatstroke and dehydration. Symptoms of heatstroke include lethargy, lack of appetite, drooling, open mouth and panting. Immediately call a veterinarian if you notice any of these symptoms.
To treat a rat with a heatstroke, first wet the rat’s fur in tepid or lukewarm water. Next, apply a covered ice pack to the affected area. This will cool blood that flows to the brain. Alternatively, you can place an ice pack on the armpits or groin. Be sure to place the fur between the ice pack and the skin.
Rats cannot tolerate very high temperatures. If you have a rat in your home and it gets too hot, he or she will overheat and die. If the temperature is too hot, you should consider moving it to another place. Rats are not known to tolerate water well.
Rats can tolerate temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but they can’t tolerate temperatures over 98 degrees. Once the temperature reaches this point, they will start to show signs of distress, including heavy breathing, increased pulse rate, lethargy, and drooling. If the temperature rises past 104 degrees, the symptoms can lead to convulsions and death.
