How High Can Rats Fall?
Rats are known to be good jumpers and can jump up to 50 feet without getting hurt. This allows them to climb up walls and fall down them without much difficulty. They are also incredibly light in comparison to their size, so they do not build up much momentum in free fall. Even if a rat were to fall from a third floor to a piece of broken glass, they will not be injured.
Rats can jump a little bit farther than mice, but they are much smaller. They can leap two feet to the top of a garbage can, and three feet if they start running. That’s equivalent to a person leaping from a driveway to the top of a roof.
Rats are a highly adaptable species. Their inbreeding habits allow them to multiply quickly, and two rats in a warehouse can become more than 1000 rats within a year. They are very hardy and will swim over one kilometer in open water, and can even navigate sewer lines. Rats can jump 36 inches vertically and 48 inches horizontally, and they can fall from 50 feet without any injury.
Rats are small, but have a great deal of energy. They have a hard time standing still, and often jump. This gives them the opportunity to jump over three or four feet, and they are also good climbers. Some of the heights they can reach will surprise you. A typical pet rat can jump more than 20 feet horizontally.
