How Does a Rat Make Sound?
WouterA rat can make a variety of sounds that are similar to human sounds, but they’re also distinct from human speech. Although rats are mostly quiet, you may hear their chattering noises when you’re near a rat’s nest. This is often an indication that the animal is in need of medical attention.
Rats also make hissing noises. These are typically accompanied by chest cavity vibrations, and are the first sign of an underlying respiratory problem. Symptoms of respiratory problems can be treated with antibiotics, but there are some other causes of the noises. These can be related to scarring or genetic defects.
Although rats are often able to hide during the day, they come out of their hiding places during the night to be active and hunt for food or to find a new nest site. The type of sound a rat makes depends on their activity level and location. Rats also make sounds when they’re chasing after prey, mating, or simply trying to make themselves heard. The noises they make are often too high for human hearing.
Rats also produce a squeaking sound, called bruxing, when they grind their incisors against each other. This sound is similar to a cat purring, and it can also indicate nervousness, unrest, or illness.
