How Big a Rat Can Be

The size of a rat will depend on its species, age, and gender. Adult rats are larger than baby rats, and male rats are generally heavier than females. In general, a rat can reach 4 pounds in weight. In some cases, a rat can grow up to 15 inches in length.

While the size of a rat’s hole is based on its shape, purchase, and height, the size of the hole is also affected by the rat’s age. A freshly weaned juvenile rat can fit through a hole that is much smaller than an adult rat.

The size of a rat varies from species to species, but an average adult rat is approximately nine to eleven inches long, seven to nine inches long, and has a tail that can reach 20 inches in length. Its average weight is about two pounds, but can grow as large as two pounds. The average rat can fit through a doorway with an opening as small as a quarter.

Rats reproduce in the spring or fall and have litters of six to twelve babies. Young rats reach reproductive maturity within three months. A female will usually have four to six litters a year. Although a rat can live up to 18 months, most rats die before they reach that age.
