Do Rats Get Along With Other Rats?
Often asked, “Do rats get along with other rats?” the answer to this question depends on a number of factors. Some rats are naturally more territorial than others, which may make introductions difficult. However, with patience and the right introduction techniques, rats can be taught to get along with one another.
The first step in introducing two new rats to one another is to separate them for 15 minutes or so. After that, allow the rats to be alone for two to three days. At first, they may be reluctant to eat together. This is natural, as they will avoid discomfort. This is also a good sign that the rats trust each other. If they do start to fight, you can separate them with a towel.
If you do notice any aggressive behavior, speak up and make sure the other rat understands that you do not like it. Use a firm voice when telling them, “no!” or “be nice.” You can also gently tap them on the head if they are being aggressive. After this, return them to their cage.
If you’re introducing two rats to each other for the first time, be sure to use a cage that is large enough for both rats. It should be large enough for them to live in together and sleep separately. Once they feel safe in their own space, they will more likely snuggle up together. However, this is not without risk and you should wait until your young rat has grown strong enough to stand up for itself before introducing him to the older rat.
