Do Rats Come in Packs?
When rats live in a home, they are most likely living in packs, so if you see a rat in your home, chances are, there are many others in the same area. A pair of rats will start a pack, which may have one dominant male or several. The male will often move on to mate with another rat quickly, so there are always multiple rats in a pack.
Rats eat anything, and they can be quite destructive. Rats will gnaw through garbage, trash, small pets, and human food. If you have a rat in your home, you may want to make sure the food is stored inside. The same applies to pet food, if it is kept outdoors.
Rats live in both urban and rural areas and can easily enter your home if they can find water and food sources. Since rats are good swimmers, you should be aware that they can stay in water for three days. They can also hold their breath for long periods of time and come up through a toilet to get into your home.
Adult rats spend most of their lives foraging and mating. They are extremely strong and resilient pests, and can easily climb trees and roofs. They can use their excellent sense of smell to find food, and they can fit into small spaces. In buildings, they can even eat human food.
