Do Rats Cause Flies?
WouterThe smell of rotting flesh is not always noticed by the casual observer, but it’s a common symptom of a rat infestation. If you’re not careful, this smell can make you sick. Additionally, flies are known to carry disease and bacteria. When they land on dead rats and other rat remains, the flies can carry these pathogens to humans.
If you suspect your home of having rats, the first thing you should do is inspect your house for holes and cracks. Rats can enter through holes and cracks in the masonry and wood. Once they enter, they’ll make holes in the walls and floors. These holes will be circular, about two to three inches in diameter, and close to the floor or wall. You’ll also notice the distinctive musk odor of rats.
Rats are also highly nocturnal creatures and leave their nests at dusk. The winter season also reduces their breeding activity. However, mild winters mean fewer rats die from natural causes. During the spring season, rat populations will increase due to the onset of vegetation and increased rainfall. Once the spring rains arrive, the rats will have ample food and new areas to nest.
Rats are not only a nuisance but also a health hazard. They can carry multiple diseases and track ticks and fleas indoors. Even one rat going rogue will indicate that more rats have made a nest in your home. If you notice a large rat infestation, you should try to get rid of the rat.
