Where Can I Find Mosquitoes?
Despite being tiny, mosquitoes are dangerous to humans. Not only can they transmit a variety of diseases, but they can also cause itchy and painful bites. There are many different species of mosquitoes in North America and in the world. Depending on the species, some of them may be capable of carrying the West Nile virus.
Most mosquitoes live in moist, shady places. Some of them build nests in overgrown shrubbery or flowers. Some may even hide inside houses. Some species will bite birds, but others will feed on frogs and turtles.
Fortunately, there are several ways to keep mosquitoes out of your yard. The first step is to eliminate their breeding sites. This means cleaning out puddles left by leaking air conditioners and faucets, removing debris from lakes and rivers, and discarding refuse that can hold water.
In addition to removing these sources of standing water, you should make sure that your home is screened. Broken screens and unscreened windows can allow mosquitoes to enter. You can also install aeration systems to reduce mosquito habitat.
If you have an ornamental pool, you can aerate it and add fish to kill mosquitoes. You can also clean out a wading pool. You should do this at least once a week to keep the water clear.
You can also control the spread of mosquitoes by making sure there are no stagnant water sources around your home. This means that you should empty bird baths and pet dishes every week, and dispose of any discarded items that can hold water. You should also ensure that your yard is free of trash and debris.
