How to Keep Mosquitoes Out of Drains

Often, homeowners do not take the time to clear drains in their yards. This can lead to a build-up of water, which provides an ideal breeding site for mosquitoes. If you have a yard, check your drains after a rainstorm and make sure the inlet and outlet are free of debris. You can also use a window screen to keep mosquitoes out.

If you live in a home with a septic tank, you will need to inspect the tank regularly. You should fix any broken pipes or missing covers. You should also keep the tank sealed, as it provides a good hiding place for mosquitoes.

Bathroom drains are another place where mosquitoes can breed. These are clogged with hair and soap scum, which creates a perfect environment for mosquitoes to lay their eggs.

Houseplants are also a common hiding place for mosquitoes. They need to be kept properly hydrated, but overwatering can be harmful to the plants. The best hiding places for mosquitoes are damp and dark areas.

During the summer, you should also take the time to clean your gutters. Debris collects in gutters, which can make it difficult to see what is going on. You should also make sure your garbage cans are emptied at the end of the night. Leaving trash cans upside down may create a pool of water that can attract mosquitoes.

Besides preventing mosquitoes from entering your home, you can also kill them. You can mix one-half cup of vinegar with one-half cup of salt and pour it down the drain. Or you can cover the inlet with a rag that has been soaked in vinegar for a few hours. You can also rinse the pipe with the hottest water possible.
