How High Can Mosquitoes Live?
Almost everywhere in the world, mosquitoes can be found. They live in trees, in stagnant water, on the ground and in high rise buildings. They are the cause of many diseases. They can live between 25 and 30 feet above the ground. They have shorter wings than most flying insects. They can fly at up to 800 times per second.
When the mosquitoes fly they travel at about one to 1.5 miles per hour. They can fly high in high altitude winds. Some of them fly as high as 950 feet. They can also travel long distances. They may even travel hundreds of kilometers in a single night.
Most mosquitoes prefer to breed at low altitudes. They prefer to breed at a height of 25 feet or less. They also do not like to fly very far from their breeding grounds. Often they will travel about fifty to a hundred meters from their breeding grounds.
Other mosquito species like to breed at a higher altitude. Some of them prefer to breed in tree holes up to 50 feet above the ground. They can also breed in high-rise apartment buildings.
Some mosquito species can survive up to ten feet off the ground. They will live for a very long time if they can find enough food to feed on. The temperature also affects their life span. They can live in a cooler environment, but they will die if the temperature gets too hot.
