Can Mosquitoes Cause Meningitis?
Viruses are the most common causes of meningitis. Often, a person infected with a virus will have no symptoms. However, severe brain infections can result in permanent brain damage or even death.
West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause encephalitis, a dangerous neurological infection. It is found in many parts of the world, including the United States. It can cause mild to severe illness in humans and animals. It is often carried by female mosquitoes.
The virus usually affects people with a weak immune system. Children and adults aged 50 or older are more susceptible to the disease. The disease usually develops between two and 14 days after a bite from an infected mosquito.
The symptoms of WNV are flu-like. Some people may not even notice a bite from an infected mosquito. Those who do experience symptoms of the virus will recover in about five to 14 days without medical treatment.
There are several different types of viruses that can cause encephalitis. These include the Western equine virus, the St. Louis virus, and the Eastern equine virus. Each type of disease has its own symptoms.
Fortunately, there are methods to protect yourself against mosquitoes. The first step is to use an insect repellent that is effective on bare skin. You can also use a mosquito net when sleeping outdoors.
When you are outside, make sure that you wear light colored clothing. Then, make sure that you keep the area around your house and yard free of standing water.
