What Head Lice Feels Like
Itching is one of the most common symptoms of head lice. It can occur on any area of the scalp, but it’s usually most prominent behind the ears or at the hairline. The itching is a reaction to the lice’s saliva that irritates the skin. It usually starts slowly and does not occur immediately. However, once it starts, it can last a few days.
Head lice are tiny gray or tan-colored insects that live on human blood. They lay eggs in the hair shafts less than a quarter-inch (5 millimeters) from the scalp. The eggs hatch after about six to nine days. The nymphs grow into fully grown adults within a month or two. The adult louse will live for three to four weeks and can lay six to ten eggs a day.
The best treatment for head lice is to consult a doctor. You should never use unproven home remedies or harmful chemicals. Always consult a doctor if you suspect your child has head lice. You can also try using a prescription medicine that is designed to kill lice. This medicine will only work if your child has been exposed to infected clothing, so it’s important to use it correctly.
When lice are present, your scalp may itch. Itching is not accompanied by pain, although it can be uncomfortable. You may also experience dry skin flakes. You can use medicated shampoos to treat lice. However, before applying a medicated shampoo on a young child, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure that lice are indeed the culprit.
