How Long Can Head Lice Live Without a Host?

They can also survive on objects and other people, but the most common way they spread is through direct contact. The louse life cycle begins with the nit, which is a tiny yellow speck about a millimeter long. It attaches itself to an individual hair strand.
An adult head lice can live up to 30 days on a host’s head. Once removed, these lice will die. They will lay at least 100 eggs during their lifetime. Adult lice are smaller than a sesame seed and have six legs. Their eggs hatch after 4-10 days and become fully mature in nine to twelve days. During this time, they will begin to lay eggs.
When the eggs hatch, the lice will lay eggs on the host’s hair strands. These eggs will then fall out on pillows and sheets. The louse will die if it is unable to find a host, but the eggs will still lay. If you suspect that your child has head lice, the first step is to clean bedding thoroughly. Infected bed linens should be machine washed and dried.
To prevent head lice from spreading to others, you should avoid wearing contaminated items. Try not to share hats with others or stuffed animals. Make sure you wash all personal items in hot water and dry them thoroughly. If your child’s clothing isn’t washable, put it in a plastic bag for at least two weeks to kill any lice.
