Are Lice Or Nits on Your Hair?
If you suspect you have lice or nits on your hair, you should first look for them in hair around your ears and the nape of your neck. If you find lice, it is important to remove the nits right away. Lice eggs look like tiny seeds, and they can be found attached to individual hairs close to the scalp.
You should not panic if you find lice. The risk of contracting head lice is minimal, and many methods are available that will help you treat the problem effectively. Head lice are not contagious, and the first step to getting rid of them is to get your child to wash his or her hair often. If you find lice, the school nurse will likely send you child home for treatment. However, the most important way to prevent lice is to instill in your child the importance of not sharing anything that touches his or her head. You should also keep an eye out for lice and check your child’s hair often throughout the school year.
If you notice nits further than 1/4 inch from the base of the hair shaft, they are most likely already hatched. In this case, you will have to use an anti-lice shampoo to kill the lice. You should also check for an itchy scalp.
