Why Do Flies Land on Me?

If you are a human, you may wonder, why do flies land on me? These flies are not specifically targeting you, but they are attracted to your scent. While flies cannot smell your blood, they are attracted to the smell of sweat and dead skin. Luckily, they aren’t aggressive, and they usually leave you alone.

Flies spend the day buzzing around, and at night, they get tired. This is when they will search for a place to rest. Flies will usually land on tall grass, under a rock, or the underside of leaves. These tiny creatures are only one millimeter long, and their hearts are very small, dilating into an aorta that travels through the thorax and opens in the head.

Most flies do not have teeth, so they cannot chew solid food. Their mouthparts are shaped like spongy straws, and they are able to digest liquid food by releasing digestive juices. Some flies even regurgitate their food as bubbles that they then vomit.

Flies can land on humans for a variety of reasons, but the main reason they land on you is because they feed on your skin. Some flies pierce your skin to get at blood. Others use their proboscis to suck up fluids and dead skin cells. They also take advantage of your body heat to gain access to food.
