Why Do Flies Drink Alcohol?
It may come as a surprise to know that flies drink alcohol. Researchers in the Priest lab have used fruit flies to study the effects of alcohol on flies. They found that virgin female fruit flies drank more alcohol after mating when they were exposed to mating calls.
The reason for this might be related to the neuropeptide F that is produced by the flies’ brains. Alcohol stimulates the neuropeptide F, which is similar to the chemical produced in the brains of humans. The chemicals that regulate alcohol consumption and sexual preference are closely related to each other, so it is not surprising that flies would have similar behavior.
Researchers have also discovered that fruit flies can self-administer alcohol in similar ways to human beings. The researchers have even found that fruit flies can show signs of alcoholism by regularly drinking alcohol until they become drunk. Moreover, they can develop a tolerance to alcohol and continue to drink it despite its dangerous side effects. The researchers have also found that fruit flies will continue drinking alcohol after being removed from an alcohol-rich environment. Moreover, fruit flies are more likely to turn to alcohol if they are rejected or unable to find a suitable sexual partner.
The study also found that flies choose to drink alcohol to kill parasitic wasps. Infections can also make them thirsty and intoxicated. Thus, flies that drink alcohol to kill parasites are likely to drink more than those who do not.
