What Size Flies For Smallmouth Bass?

When it comes to smallmouth bass, the size of your fly is extremely important. A large fly creates large strikes. Because bass usually stay close to the bank, they wait for their prey to fall into the water. Then, once they hear a mouse hit the water, they strike hard to make sure that the mouse doesn’t get away. The size of your fly depends on several factors, including the type of water you are fishing.

Size is also influenced by the available prey. During prespawn, smallmouth will typically crush a six-inch Bulkhead, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use smaller flies. Likewise, the size of the hook will depend on the size of the forage you’re targeting. If you’re fishing in an area with high forage production, you may want to use a larger hook.

Color of the fly is another factor that can affect how well a fly will attract smallmouth bass. Fish in clear waters prefer streamers that mimic the color of the water. While brown streamers are generally the best choice, fish in darker water may bite on lighter colored ones, too.

Topwater fishing is also a fun way to catch smallmouth bass. These sneaky little fish love to smash poppers off the surface of the water. Simple bass poppers are excellent choices for topwater fishing, and can sometimes be more effective than the deer hair popper. These poppers create a lot of noise and are durable. Topwater poppers can be fished in two ways, and are best used around cover and fast current.
