What Flies Should I Use For Bass?

There are several factors to consider when choosing the right fly pattern for bass fishing. First, the fly has to have a wide range of movement. Fish that are wary will chase the fly for a long distance before they decide to strike it. Another important factor is the angler’s ability to present the fly to the bass.

Streamers: This type of fly is a good choice for largemouth bass, especially in cold water. When choosing the size of the fly, it’s important to match the size of the crayfish found in the area. Usually, a size 6 orange Nancy P fly works best. Fish the fly along the bottom by bouncing it up and down.

Gurglers: These flies have a slightly different action from poppers. A gurgler rolls slightly under the surface of the water, creating a bubble trail that attracts bass. The action is quieter than a popper, which makes it suitable for calm water.

If the fishing area is shallow, bass will tend to seek cover. These lakes offer the widest range of fly fishing techniques and allow anglers to practice different techniques. In shallow lakes, bass will usually feed on frogs jumping off logs, small baitfish in grasses, or crayfish digging holes in mud. If the prey is able to lose the cover, it will usually strike the fly. You must always remember that bass are not easy to hook, so you must be patient and keep at it.
