How Long Do Flies Last Without Food?
Fly life expectancy varies from species to species. Most flies live for 15 to 25 days, but some can live for 30 days. Maggots, the larval stage of a fly, can survive for two to three days without food. But once the maggot reaches pupation, it will live out the life expectancy of an adult fly.
The fruit fly goes through all four of its life stages fairly quickly. According to the World Health Organization, it takes between six and 42 days from egg to adult. A fruit fly egg develops into a larva in a few hours, and the larvae will take a few days to grow. The larvae will then develop into a pupa, which has a protective shell. After pupation, the fly will mature into an adult and reproduce.
If left in an air-conditioned room, a fly can survive for two to three days without food. However, their lifespan will be reduced considerably if the temperature is too high. If a fly is left without food for more than two weeks, it will die. If it survives, it will most likely mate two to three days after it has been deprived of food.
While the average fly lives for two to three days without food, the duration of its life depends on where it lives. Flies in cooler climates live longer and reproduce faster. However, a typical house is the perfect environment for flies to survive.
