How Long Do Black Flies Live?

Black flies are active only during the day and will not bite at night. Some species are more active at certain times of the day, particularly on humid days and before storms. This means that the best times to get outside and work in the yard or garden are early mornings, midday, and late afternoon.
Black flies live for about three weeks in the water. During this time, they can mate with another insect and lay their eggs. Mating can occur during flight or after the insects have landed. Before laying eggs, the female black fly needs to have a blood meal.
