Choosing What Size Flies For Steelhead

When it comes to fly fishing for steelhead, the choice of size and fly type is an important consideration. While some anglers prefer to use monofilament, others are more comfortable using fly line. Fortunately, there are many options that will help you find the right fly for steelhead.

One of the first choices for steelhead flies is an egg pattern. Egg patterns are effective at attracting steelhead when they’re laying eggs. One variation of this pattern uses a peachy yarn tied around a white vail over the edge with a blood dot in the center. This pattern is tied on a size 10 hook.

When choosing a fly, consider the size and weight. Winter steelhead respond best to flies of 3/8-inch to 2.5-inch length. Flies that are smaller than this are likely to be ignored by the fish. For the most part, a seven or eight-weight fly rod will be sufficient. However, if you’re targeting king salmon, you might want to try a nine or ten-weight fly rod. You’ll also want to consider the length of your rod. Typically, nine feet is a standard length for a fly rod, though some anglers like to use longer ones.

Another popular fly for steelhead is an Egg-Sucking Leech. These nymphs imitate leeches and lampreys feeding on salmon eggs. Fish will often bite on these flies for several hours or even days.
