Can Flies Drink Coffee?
The new study, Can flies drink coffee, demonstrates a new mechanism for the sense of taste. Fly taste bristles contain a protein called Gr66a. In flies, Gr66a is required to detect caffeine. Other compounds in coffee, tea, and chocolate do not produce this response in the flies.
Using coffee grounds as a fly repellent is a natural way to repel mosquitoes. To make the mixture, you can place three tablespoons of coffee grounds in a cup of water. Pour the mixture into a closed container and place in a cool, dry place. Do not place this mixture in a pond, because the grounds will attract mosquito larvae.
One method of fly control is to use a vinegar trap. You can make a trap out of any type of vinegar, but red wine or apple cider vinegar should be used. Place the mixture in a plastic container, and poke it with a knife or a pin. This will trap the flies and prevent them from crawling out.
Another way to repel flies is to keep your coffee maker clean. Flies are attracted to warm, moist areas. Keeping your coffee maker clean and sanitized can prevent this problem. Some people store coffee grounds in an airtight container to use for compost or other recipes. However, make sure you don’t leave any used coffee grounds in the coffee machine. Flies love moist and decaying fruit, which makes them attractive to the insects.
