Will Dawn Soap Help With Fleas?
Using Dawn soap on your dog’s coat and rugs can help eliminate fleas and prevent them from coming back. This soap works within minutes and can be applied to both areas that have fleas and those where fleas are most active. To apply Dawn soap on your dog’s coat and fur, simply soak your dog in water. Lather the soap into the coat to reach all of the fleas’ hiding places. When fleas come into contact with the soapy water, they will die.
Dawn soap works by killing the flea eggs in your pet’s coat by breaking down their hard exoskeletons. Fleas are able to float in water because of their high surface tension, but Dawn is a surfactant and breaks the surface tension causing the fleas to sink to the bottom. Fortunately, this method is not 100% effective.
Fleas lay eggs that hatch within one to ten days. Once mature, they will jump back onto your pet. Using Dawn soap for flea prevention can only help in the short term, as fleas have a short life cycle. Fleas can lay up to 50 eggs a day, and about 10% of them will hatch.
Dawn soap is a great solution for treating fleas on your pet, but you have to be very careful to avoid getting soap in your pet’s eyes and ears. Always use the proper amount of soap for each particular area, but remember to be gentle when doing so. You should use a flea comb to remove any dead fleas from your pet’s coat.
