It’s important to know which blood type fleas like in order to prevent an infestation. The first step in preventing fleas is knowing your dog’s blood type. Ticks are most attracted to Type A blood, while Type B blood is the least attractive to ticks. Ticks generally feed on mammal or bird blood, and are active in the United States in the spring and summer.

Fleas prefer blood type A because of its high protein content, whereas those with blood type B were less palatable. This preference may affect tick migration and infection, but the reason behind this is still unknown. In the UK, type O blood is the most common blood type, followed by type A blood. Type B blood is less common.

A person with type O blood is twice as likely to be targeted by mosquitoes compared to people with other blood types. Although these insects are usually associated with warm climates, recent hot weather has led them to increase their population. Those with type O blood are more likely to attract mosquitoes, since they emit more carbon dioxide.
