Where Does a Dog Catch Fleas?

Fleas are not only annoying, but they can also cause discomfort to your dog. They can spread diseases, and the longer they live on your dog, the greater the risk of an infestation. Fleas can jump from host to host, so you need to find out if your pet has fleas before they bite.

Fleas can be brought into your home on clothing, shoes, or pant legs. You can prevent your dog from catching fleas by keeping your home clean and free of grass and other vegetation. Also, try not to leave out food for your dog, or food for other animals.

Fleas are tiny insects about an eighth of an inch long. Their bodies are reddish-brown in color. They are extremely thin, with long, big back legs. They can jump 12 inches in one leap, and one adult flea can harbor as many as 100 immature fleas. Flea dirt will appear on your pet’s fur as specks of dried blood. Once rehydrated, these specks will turn brown.

Fleas can infest your dog at many locations, including kennels and large gardens. Fleas can also jump onto your dog from carriers or other dogs.
