How Young Can Puppies Get Fleas?
If you have a new puppy, one of the first things you need to do is to check your puppy for fleas. Fleas can be a pain, especially for puppies because they itch all over their body. If your puppy’s skin is red or has bumps, fleas may be present.
There are two types of flea preventatives. One is a prescription medication, while the other is a store-bought product. While prescription medication is safe for puppies, store-bought products contain chemicals that can be passed on to your puppy through its mother’s milk. Another option is a natural flea comb. Flea combs can safely remove fleas from your puppy, and they are effective for puppies as young as four weeks.
Fleas can be harmful to your puppy, so you should always prevent your puppy from coming into contact with fleas as young as possible. Fleas are also known to transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis.
Fleas spread very quickly once they find a host. The life cycle of a flea starts at the egg stage and continues through the pupae, larvae, and adult fleas. The life cycle can take three to six weeks in typical household conditions.
